When You Thought I Wasn’t Looking – I Do Know It’s Christmas
When you thought I wasn’t looking,
I saw you hang my cotton ball Santa on the refrigerator
And I wanted to make you another one.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you go out during a snow storm and feed the birds
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make my favorite Christmas cookies for me – the peanut butter ones with the Hersheys kisses
And I knew that little things are special things.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you say a prayer celebrating Jesus’ birth
And I believed there was a God I could always talk to
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I felt you kiss me good night on Christmas Eve when I knew you were exhausted from wrapping, and baking and cleaning,
And I felt loved.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes when you thought about the Easy Baked Ovens, dolls, and dress-up clothes that all of a sudden, aren’t under the tree anymore
And I learned that sometimes you’re sad - and it’s okay to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw that you cared enough to pass down all those family traditions so Christmas will always be special and memorable for me
And I wanted to be everything I could be for the family I would have some day
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked…and saw it all – the hiding of presents, the wrapping and putting together toys after bedtime, the spending more than you could afford, the exhaustion of too many activities and too few days…
I looked…and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.
